Indigenous careers strategy

VU has developed Yannoneit, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Career Development Strategy as part of our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Yannoneit Employment Strategy (YES) encourages the recruitment and career development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff by providing opportunities to gain professional qualifications, work skills and experience in a wide range jobs at VU.

Yannoneit Employment Strategy (YES) aims

YES aims is to build on and support the goals of Bathelmun Yalingwa. The strategy also aims to:

  • Increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees at VU to achieve a target of 3% of the workforce.
  • Increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander academic staff at VU. This includes growing the academic workforce by increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in Higher Degrees by Research.
  • Increase the number of cultural awareness sessions to a minimum of four per year with a focus on managers attaining employment targets and staff retention.
  • Provide for the professional development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across all positions at VU to enable the career advancement of academic staff.
  • Provide tailored, culturally sensitive induction processes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.
  • Establish and promote VU as a supportive, culturally sensitive and significant employer of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Following the release of the Bathelmun Yalingwa strategy a revised and updated Employment Strategy is in development to be finalised shortly. The new strategy includes specific actions and annual key performance indicators for the attainment of the aims of Yannoneit.

VU provides career opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on a part-time, full-time, fixed term contract, sessional and casual basis. We provide training and can help you gain formal accreditation for learning that occurs on-the-job so you don't always need formal qualifications.

We also have an  Indigenous leave policy that allows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to take leave to meet family, ceremonial and cultural obligations, and stay connected to their community.

At VU we have a dedicated, full-time Aborginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Community Liaison Officer who works with prospective and existing staff to enable their support and development at the University. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Community Liaison Officer provides assistance with:

  • job applications
  • interviewing processes
  • induction
  • ongoing wellbeing.

The Officer also works with internal managers to assist them to recruit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.
