Victoria University welcomes the State Government's announcement to build a new world-class hospital at the Footscray Park Campus, with construction to begin within two years.

“Victoria University welcomes the Premier’s far-sighted announcement of the State Government’s intention to build a new Footscray Hospital at Victoria University’s Footscray Park Campus,” said Victoria University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Peter Dawkins.

“This commitment will create a world-class health and education precinct in and around Victoria University’s Footscray Park Campus, which will also include a College of Health and Biomedicine, a College of Sport and Exercise Science, and an Institute for Health and Sport at Victoria University.

“Our partnership with the new hospital will be of major significance for the further development of our already high standing in education and research in the areas of health, biomedicine, exercise and sport.

“The new hospital will be a further boost to the development of the Footscray University Town, developed through our work with the Maribyrnong City Council and the West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA).

“It already includes two Victoria University Campuses, and a substantial presence at the Victoria University Whitten Oval, as well as a community hub at MetroWest in downtown Footscray. It will also be a huge boost for the west of Melbourne, the fastest growing region in Victoria, which needs massive expansion in its health and education facilities.

“Victoria University is already investing substantially in co-locating some of its health and education facilities at the expanding Sunshine Hospital. Now this massive investment at our Footscray Park Campus - which will be complemented by further investment by Victoria University - will represent another quantum leap for the west.

“The new health hub will bring about significant improvements for the health and education of all Victorians and will be a game changer in terms of what the University can further offer to its local and international students, staff, and partners.

“The University has been engaged in positive discussions with the Department of Health and Human Services and our wonderful partners at Western Health about the new hospital, and we look forward to working together to implement it over the coming years,” said Professor Dawkins.
