Victoria University is ranked among the state’s best universities in the innovative subjects of Engineering and Technology, and Computer Science in today’s Times Higher Education World University Subject Rankings 2018.

VU’s teaching and research in Computer Science was named second best among Victorian universities (ninth in Australia), while its Engineering and Technology was ranked third in the state (14th in Australia).

VU College of Engineering and Science Dean Professor Farzad Khosrowshahi said today’s announcement reflects VU’s winning strategy to prepare its students for jobs of the future, and conduct ground-breaking, globally-important research in areas such as applied informatics, sustainability, and electronic engineering.

“VU has long been distinctive for its practical and applied focus, and its strong links to industry. Our courses prepare students not just for a career, but for life-long learning,” he said.

VU’s engineering and computer science programs – ranging from entry-level diplomas through to world-class postgraduate courses in enterprise-resource planning (ERP) – have been designed to focus on skills and knowledge that offer students the strongest future growth potential.

“Both these areas are strongly student-focused with dedicated educators who span both industry and academia, locally and internationally,” he said. “The use of problem-based learning in our engineering courses ensures our students start working as professionals early on in their studies.”

Today’s ranking announcement supports VU’s result in the most recent Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) rankings, which placed VU’s engineering research ‘above world standard,’ and the sub-discipline of electrical and electronic engineering as ‘well-above world standard.’

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research and Research Training, Professor Warren Payne said the Times Higher Education subject results reinforced VU's growing reputation on the global stage, and “demonstrates the hard work and innovations taking place to build on VU’s strengths as a world-class university in Melbourne's West.”
