Meet the coaches

Maxwell Viitala - Women's Head Coach

Maxwell brings a wealth of basketball knowledge and experience to Victoria University's Women's Basketball team. In 2014, he was a representative of the VU Basketball Academy, and was later offered a scholarship to play for Canada's Lakeland College. When returning, his tall stature, at 196 cm, and strong leadership qualities, enabled him to become a pivotal player in the NBL1.

In 2022, he took the helm as head coach and guided the VU team to a National Champion ship title at Unisport Nationals. His ability to motivate players and to foster a strong team culture, as well as his emphasis on individual development, have been instrumental in the team's success. Maxwell is dedicated to helping the team become the best they can be, while also encouraging them to take responsibility for their performance and work together towards common goals.

Maverick has been an integral part of Victoria University's basketball success at Unisport Nationals since 2015, and we're thrilled to have him return for another season of the University Basketball League.

Maverick has been instrumental in VU's success, starring as head coach of the team crowned National Champions in 2018. Prior to coaching in VU's basketball program, Maverick was an excellent player with state representation and NBL1 experience.

Maverick is passionate about player development both on and off the court, believing that basketball can promote structure, work ethic, collaboration, and other important values. He is delighted to bring the successful culture and high performance standard that he has built to the playing group and is looking forward to season 3.
