NHMRC funding

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is Australia's peak body supporting health and medical research, and developing health advice for the Australian community, health professionals and governments.

Funding opportunities

NHMRC funding provides opportunities for researchers to work with health organisations so research results can be better tailored and applied to health care practice and policy.

There are a range of grants available that focus on:

  • creating new knowledge
  • accelerating research translation
  • building Australia's future capability
  • working with partners.

NHMRC Project Grants

The Project Grants scheme is the NHMRC's main avenue of support for individuals and small teams of researchers undertaking relevant research. Biomedical, public health and health services research in Australian universities, medical schools, hospitals and other research institutions are eligible.

NHMRC fellowships

To build Australia’s future capability for research and translation, NHMRC funds the best and brightest researchers and research teams. It also provides grants to support the infrastructure required to complete health and medical research in Australia.

Grantee variations

For major variations to awarded NHMRC grants, the Chief Investigator A (CIA) must submit a request to change the approved funding proposal via the Research Grants Management System (RGMS).

Visit the NHMRC grantee variations webpage for further details on the types of variations which require the submission of a grantee variation request, and for more information on the steps involved in this process.

Multi-institutional collaboration protocol

VU encourages their researchers to collaborate on research projects with their colleagues at other universities and research institutes. However, as research projects have a resource implication for both the researcher and the University, it is essential that VU researchers ensure that the funding resources to undertake their component of the project come to the University.

Such negotiations with external colleagues can be challenging. However, it is only reasonable to expect that funds be provided to the University as part of a VU researcher's contribution and involvement in the research project. Research Services can provide researchers with advice and support for any such negotiations.

VU researchers who are collaborating on a research project where the application will be submitted through another institution should be aware that the Certification Page must be signed by both their College Research Director and Director, Research Services (on behalf of the PVC Research & Research Training and the University). The College Research Director needs to ensure that all committed resources for the project are available.
