As a marketing professional, you need to have design skills and you need to know how to manage PR and communications. The VU degree covers the whole gamut of the industry, which is what makes it so valuable for my career goals.
Kuhan Supramaniam
Master of Digital Media
Building on a background in communications, Kuhan Supramaniam came to Victoria University to expand his skills in digital media. The Malaysian-born international student began his Master of Digital Media at VU in July 2015, following a Bachelor of Science in Communication from Upper Iowa University in the US, which he studied at the university’s Malaysian branch.
"When I was doing my undergraduate degree I worked at the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau and that’s where I developed the passion for marketing. At the time there weren’t many universities offering digital marketing courses, but VU was one of them.
When I looked at the course module I knew it would help me in my career, so that’s why I choose VU.
The first semester was really interesting – I did my own video production, including all the shooting and editing, and I also designed a prototype app for the ICU unit in a hospital – that’s where we learnt about user experience (UX) design. In second semester I built my own website, which is where I picked up some great skills in Google Analytics.
Before I started my masters I didn’t know what area of digital marketing I wanted to focus on. Now I know I want to concentrate on search engine optimisation (SEO) and Google Analytics because that’s where the market is.

I love my home country Malaysia is a beautiful country, it’s really colourful and the food is great. But here in Melbourne you can be anyone and do anything because it’s so casual and relaxed.
A lot of students have a fear of going to a new place because they don’t know if they’ll fit in or what it’s going to be like.
But if you're afraid to step outside the box, you’ll never grow as a person. So my advice is if you have a dream, follow it, because you only live once."
