Overview

This unit is the first Community-Based Research unit, which is followed by Community Based Research (Part 2) Students are required to enter into a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) contract relating to a community development project or program in an agency. The contract is negotiated between the university supervisor, agency supervisor and student, and specifies learning objectives and strategies in three areas: conceptual and policy; practical skills; and personal development. Students are required to participate in a number of key phases and activities of the program or project and write an assignment that outlines the processes and outcomes of the project.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Investigate to implement the skills and knowledge acquired in their international community development studies in a professional setting;
  2. Adapt competencies valued by employers for the sector (including: personal management and intercultural competence);
  3. Design and plan for implementation, a community development project proposal in an organisational environment (either in a community-based, regional, governmental or international setting) with reference to achieving organisational strategic outcomes;
  4. Predict and evaluate risks and suggest mitigating measures; and
  5. Critically reflect on research theory and methodologies.
  6. Participate in an academic community through reflective and critical engagement in academic texts and understanding of principles of academic integrity.
