Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to promote and encourage children’s agency. This unit applies to educators working in a range of education and care services.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

planned and implemented at least two programs that promote and encourage children’s agency, including: establishing environments and opportunities in response to children’s interests; using a range of strategies to engage and encourage children in experiences, and; planning and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum in consultation with other educators.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

how to access: the National Quality Framework; the National Quality Standards, and; the relevant approved learning framework;
how to navigate through framework and standards documents to find areas relevant to this unit of competency;
relevant theories about childhood learning;
organisation standards, policies and procedures;
strategies for intentional teaching, and;
techniques to encourage and support children to participate.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.
