Overview

This unit explores improvements in performance, in particular fitness, depend on the ability of the individual or coach to gain, apply and evaluate knowledge and understanding of training. Students undertake an activity analysis. Using the results of the analysis, they then investigate the required fitness components and participate in a training program designed to improve or maintain selected components. Athletes and coaches aim to continually improve and use nutritional, physiological and psychological strategies to gain advantage over the competition. Students learn to critically evaluate different techniques and
practices that can be used to enhance performance, and look at the rationale for the banning or inclusion of various practices from sporting competition.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each competency unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of project and work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • explain fitness assessment aims, methods, risks, safeguards, informed consent and confidentiality;
  • use appropriate technology to perform an activity analysis to collect and analyse primary data to determine major fitness components and energy systems used in sporting events and physical activities;
  • perform, observe, analyse and report on laboratory exercises designed to explore the assessment of fitness pre and post training;
  • justify the selected fitness tests in relation to the strengths and weaknesses of the testing methodology;
  • explain how chronic adaptations to the cardiovascular, respiratory and muscular systems lead to an improved performance, and;
  • design, participate in, and evaluate a six-week training program that demonstrates the correct application of training.
