Overview

Lay the foundation for a career in the building industry with a Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship 22614VIC at Victoria University.

Increase your chances of getting an apprenticeship by developing basic skills and knowledge in bricklaying and carpentry. This course will ensure you are prepared to work in labouring roles in the construction industry with studies in how to:

erect and safely use working platforms
interpret basic construction plans and drawings
apply basic bricklaying techniques
prepare surfaces for plastering
safely operate tools and equipment
apply basic stonemasonry techniques
construct basic sub-floor
construct basic wall frames
install basic external cladding
install interior fixings.

When you graduate from this course, you’ll be on your way towards a bricklaying or carpentry apprenticeship.

: The aim of the 22614VIC Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship course is to provide learners with basic industry-specific skills and knowledge to enable transition into an apprenticeship within the building and construction industries at the Certificate III level.
The Building and Construction program aims to:

provide participants with the knowledge and skills to achieve competencies that will enhance their employment prospects in the building and construction or related industries

enable participants to gain a recognised credential and to make an informed choice of vocation or career path.

Vocational Education Delivered to Secondary Schools (VDSS) and Victorian Certificate of EducationThis qualification forms part of the credit suite specified by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and may contribute towards the satisfactory completion of the Victoria Certificate of Education (VCE) Vocational Major (VM) or the Victoria Pathways Certificate (VPC).

VCE VET programs for VM and VPC students:
are fully recognised within the Units 1 to 4 structure of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE VM) and therefore may contribute towards satisfactory completion of the VCE VM.

may contribute to the satisfactory completion of the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC)

function within the National Training Framework.

Applicants for this course will need to meet the entry criteria outlined below. If you don’t meet the entry criteria, you may be able to gain entry by first completing a different course. We call this a ‘pathway’.

You may also be eligible for ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’, which lets you finish your course more quickly when you have gained some of the skills required from past study or work experience.

Course Structure

To be awarded the 22614VIC Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship, the following units of competency must be successfully completed:

nine (9) core units, and;

all units from one (1) of the selected trade streams. VU Polytechnic offers two (2) Trade streams:
Bricklaying (5 units)
Carpentry (10 units)

Course duration

Please note: This course has the following specific durations for the bricklaying and carpentry:

bricklaying pre-apprenticeship: 4 months
carpentry pre-apprenticeship: 5 months

If you are taking this course as part of Vocational Education and Training Delivered in Secondary Schools (VETDSS), it will take two years.
