Advanced standing describes the various methods by which a higher education student, or potential student, can gain credit towards their degree.

What is advanced standing?

Advanced standing is an assessment process used to recognise the skills and knowledge you have acquired, either through study or life/work experience, by matching it with the content of units within your course.

If you've already successfully completed any of the units in the course in which you are enrolling, or their equivalent, you may be eligible for advanced standing.

View VU's Advanced Standing policy.

How to apply for advanced standing

We encourage you to discuss your options with your Course & Unit Administrator (CUA) and submit your application for advanced standing when you enrol. Contact VUHQ to identify your CUA.

To apply for advanced standing, you need to complete the (Higher Education) Application for advanced standing.

If advanced standing is granted, you will be considered to have already successfully completed the unit(s), and will not have to complete the unit(s) again.

If you don’t enrol at VU within 12 months of your advanced standing approval, you will need to resubmit your application.

In order to grant you advanced standing, we must be confident in the currency of your knowledge. In fields where practice or technology is changing rapidly, advanced standing may not be granted if your knowledge is dated.

If you are receiving Centrelink payments, you must notify Centrelink of any changes to your study load as a result of a successful application.

Closing dates & submission details

Applications lodged after 31 January 2018 may not be considered for Semester 1, 2018. This applies to domestic students only.

Applications may take up to four weeks to process. Therefore, please submit your completed application as early as possible.

If you’re currently enrolled in the unit(s) for which you are seeking advanced standing, consult your Course & Unit Administrator (CUA; discover via VUHQ) about your enrolment before the Census date for that semester.

Applying online

If you’re applying for advanced standing as part of an online course application, you will be prompted to upload the application for advanced standing form along with any supporting documentation during your course application.

Applying by paper

If you’re not applying online, you can:

  • submit your application in person to VUHQ
  • post it to the mailing address below along with your supporting documentation (for international (onshore and offshore) students only):

Victoria University International
PO Box 14428
Melbourne VIC 8001

Please ensure you complete the advanced standing applicant checklist (page 5 of the application form).

Supporting evidence & documentation

Your application will be assessed based on the evidence you provide. Each piece of evidence should be clearly identified and numbered as an attachment, then listed on the first page of the application form.

You will need to provide:

  • copies of results and qualifications
  • unit(s) of study/syllabus information from the relevant course guide.

Do not send original documents. However, you may be asked to show the original documents to us at a later stage. Refer to the advanced standing applicant checklist (page 5 of the application form) for the documentation required. Copies do not have to be certified but must be true and accurate.

If your academic records are from overseas or a private university, certified copies must be provided from the appropriate government body/professional association recognised in Australia (or an equivalent authority for students studying at an offshore site). Documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by an English translation. The translator must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) or an equivalent body for offshore students.

Please note: we may contact your former institution(s) and/or current/former employer(s) for further information and/or clarification of your claim for advanced standing.

Application outcome

You’ll be notified of the outcome of your application via email. Current students must check their VU student email.

International students

If you are granted advanced standing and your study load falls below the standard full-time study load as a result, you must attach a completed Reduced Study Load application form.

Contact Victoria University International to confirm that your visa status is not put at risk by the granting of advanced standing.
