Beyond the surface

I love how VU feels more like a collaborative space, not just a lecture where you're getting spoken at. We do a lot of group work, so you don't feel like you're by yourself doing your degree.

Bachelor of Dermal Sciences

Dermal student Ashlie Thorburn shares what she loves about skin, and being part of an inspiring study environment at Victoria University (VU).

“During year 12, I was doing a lot of creative subjects, like beauty. I decided to go into the Bachelor of Dermal Sciences because I love the skin, and because it’s in the beauty industry, but it's more science based and I wanted more of a challenge.

“What I love about dermal science is how much information there is about the skin. It's not just about the surface layer. There are so many layers that help our skin protect us in the environment. It's so interesting in class, learning how the cells do so much for our body.

“When we just look at our skin, that’s not all it is. There's so much inside, which is so interesting to learn about.”

Learning through collaboration

“I love how VU feels more like a collaborative space, especially in classroom settings, not just a lecture where you're getting spoken at. We do a lot of group work, so you don't feel like you're by yourself doing your degree. You're not just here to do a degree and leave. You make friends.

“Your lecturer is always there to help you with your courses, and being able to learn from other students helps so much.

“Being able to have that balance with the VU Block Model, just doing three hours of uni, three times a week helps so much as well to balance your social life, working and everything else.”

A space to connect and thrive

“Studying in the VU City Tower is amazing, with all the new technology and everything. There are so many different labs, so much new equipment.

“Next year I’ll get to work in the VU dermal clinic. I'm very excited to get that experience so I’ll be able to graduate and feel prepared and comfortable working in the industry.

“It feels more like a community at VU than just going to uni. I've met so many people – there are so many clubs, and different opportunities and events. Everyone is so welcoming. And honestly, anyone who asks me, I'll definitely recommend them to come here.”
