Overview

In this unit, pre-service teachers will develop their teaching practice in early childhood education by viewing children as capable and learning in relationship. Pre-service teachers will critically engage with major theorists and theories in relation to children aged 3 to 5 years and childhoods grounded in meaning making, complexity, multiplicity, and context. As part of this work, pre-service teachers will analyse related research and contemporary issues. Pre-service teachers will also learn how to utilise pedagogical documentation to inform curriculum creation. This unit includes a 10-day placement with children aged 3-5 years.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically engage with major theorists and articulate theories regarding children and childhoods aged 3 to 5 years.
  2. Analyse current research and contemporary issues in relation to children 3-5 year olds.
  3. Apply pedagogical documentation as a means to generate curriculum.
  4. Demonstrate teaching and learning practices that foreground Aboriginal and Torres Islander standpoints.
