Overview

In this unit students will engage deeply with the construction of the child, childhood and early childhood education. Students will understand how these conceptualisations have changed over time and across place. Students will critically reflect on the image of the child in the Australian and global context and analyse the positioning of early childhood education in society. The unit will equip students with the ability to discuss the concept of the child, childhood and early childhood education from a sociological perspective.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Examine historical, societal and political changes in early childhood education in Australia and worldwide;
  2. Critically reflect on the changing nature of childhood, the image of the child and the role of the early childhood workforce;
  3. Compose a deep understanding of early childhood education and children from a sociological perspective, considering the roles of culture and history
