Overview

In this unit students will explore a range of critical perspectives in the field of educational leadership. These include an historical understanding of the emergence of the field, the transition from administration and management to leadership. The unit will examine issues of, power, gender, and feminist approaches, as well as equity and social justice. Critical perspectives provide an important contribution to understanding how educational leadership is conceptualised, practiced, and understood in schools and other educational organisations.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the theory and practice of educational leadership;
  2. Exhibit comprehensive knowledge and understanding of how the complexity of modern society impacts educational leadership practice;
  3. Analyse and position themselves in relation to global and local professional and scholarly educational debates; and
  4. Critically relate their own practice to their new knowledge of educational leadership in a complex modern society and demonstrate their capacity to articulate this.
