Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assess clients presenting with symptoms, musculoskeletal conditions or restriction in range of motion. It requires the ability to gather client information, conduct specific tests and bring information together to develop a remedial massage treatment plan. There is a strong focus on functional anatomy.This unit applies to remedial massage therapists.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each units learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • conduct a complete remedial massage client assessment on three different people that involves:
  • completing each assessment within an acceptable commercial timeframe
  • whole upper body assessment including shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand
  • whole lower body assessment including pelvis, hip, knee, ankle and foot
  • whole spinal assessment including cervical, thoracic and lumbar
  • using remedial assessment techniques:

    discussion
    daily movement tasks
    muscle strength and length tests
    observation including variations of posture
    orthopaedic tests
    palpation of relevant bony landmarks and muscles
    range of motion (ROM) testing including active, passive and resisted

  • discussing treatment options and rationale with each client
  • engaging each client in decision making.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
