Overview

This unit approaches civil infrastructure design in the light of the relevant Australian Standards, covering sustainability aspects such as safety, serviceability, response and resilience to various hazardous events, and reduction in carbon emissions.
This unit covers various topics such as section analysis of bridge box girders, culverts and others, influence lines, design loads as per AS/NZS 1170 and AS 5100, design of precast prestressed concrete bridge girders using critical stress state analysis and ultimate strength analysis as per AS 3600 and AS 5100, dynamic analysis of civil infrastructures, modal analysis and stability analysis of civil infrastructures, finite element simulation in the design of civil infrastructures, civil infrastructures under hazardous events, such as cyclones and earthquakes, and reduction in carbon emissions for civil infrastructures.
In this unit, students will also have the opportunity to carry out design tasks with regard to real-world civil infrastructure considering the relevant Australian standards and further enhance their problem-solving capacity in general.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Assess the moment capacity of sections commonly adopted for civil infrastructures;
  2. Contextualise influence lines for civil infrastructures considering the relevant Australian standards and evaluate the design loads accordingly;
  3. Design precast prestressed concrete bridge girders using critical stress state analysis and ultimate strength analysis; and
  4. Propose a theoretically sound and practically feasible strategy for a civil infrastructure design task.
