About Julia Gilmartin-thomas

Dr Julia FM Gilmartin-Thomas is a Pharmacist, NHMRC-ARC Dementia Research Development Fellow (2016–current) at Institute for Health & Sport, Victoria University (VU), Senior Lecturer in Public Health, VU, and Adjunct Senior Research Fellow (School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University).

Julia is also a Deputy Research Program Leader for the Mechanisms and Interventions in Health and Disease Research Program (Institute for Health & Sport, VU) and Co-lead of the Early Career Researcher Mentoring Program (Institute for Health & Sport, VU).

Julia is also the program director, public health research program at AIMSS (Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science). Julia is an Honorary Senior Fellow (Research) (Department of Medicine, Western Health (University of Melbourne)) and leads the 'Research Showcase' segment of the Department of Medicine Western Health (University of Melbourne) Grand Round (occurring 4 times a year).

Julia was awarded her Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) in 2009, Graduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice in 2012 and PhD in 2014, all from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University. From 2013 to 2015, Julia was a CW Maplethorpe Postdoctoral Fellow for Pharmaceutical Education and Research at University College London School of Pharmacy. Julia was also a visiting postdoctoral researcher at the School of Medicine, University of Eastern Finland in 2014, supported by an Alzheimer's Australia Dementia Research Foundation Rosemary Foundation Travel Award. Julia was recently awarded a Master of Biostatistics from Monash University (2016–2020).

Julia's research interests are in quality use of medicines, pharmacoepidemiology, biostatistics, geriatrics, dementia, healthy ageing, and healthcare professional education.

Julia has an extensive network of national and international collaborators (University College London, University of Eastern Finland, University of North Carolina).

Julia has presented nationally and internationally on many occasions, as an invited speaker, at conferences, and at public engagement events.

Julia is a scientific journal reviewer, Executive Member of the MEDicines and DEMentia Special Interest Group (MEDDEM), Assistant Editor at the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research (Official Journal of The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia), and is available as a PhD student supervisor.
