Study room, laptop & specialist PC booking

The VU Library provides access to study rooms, laptops and PC with specialist software.

Find out how to book a study room, laptop or PC in advance.

Book a study room

Study Rooms are bookable using MyPC for up to two hours and up to seven days in advance. Room bookings cannot be extended and usually one booking is allowed by a user.

Study rooms are for group study only (two or more students). They are not for individual study. Study rooms can only be booked and used by VU students. They are not available for staff use.

Library staff reserve the right to cancel or re-allocate a booking, or ask someone to leave if the:

  • student who booked the room does not turn up within 15 minutes of the booking
  • room is being used by a person other than the student who has a current booking
  • room is being used by an individual
  • room is being used for a purpose other than study
  • behaviour of users is inappropriate.

Room booking guidelines

We strongly advise that you book a study room (for two or more students) in advance.

Remember to turn up within 15 minutes of the booking time, as your booking may be cancelled and re-allocated to other students.

You can book up to seven days in advance, with a limit of three active bookings at one time.

Collaborative study is encouraged and quiet study applies in some areas of campus libraries.

Please do not to use mobile phones in quiet study areas.

Borrow a laptop

You can borrow a laptop from the Library for a day-loan.

Laptop borrowing conditions

  • You must be enrolled for the current semester.
  • The laptop will be issued on your library record.
  • It must be returned by the due date and time.
  • Laptops damaged, lost, stolen or unable to be returned by the due date must be immediately reported to Library staff.
  • Failure to return the laptop by the due date and time will incur penalties.
  • No internet access is provided with the laptop but VU wireless internet is available on campus.

How to borrow & return a laptop

Day-loan laptops (5 hours)

Day-loan laptops without chargers are available from the automated laptop self-service lockers (LapSafe Lockers), located on level 1 of the Footscray Park Library, and at the City Library. See LapSafe Lockers video user guide on how to borrow, use and return a laptop.

Day-loan laptops with chargers are available via the Library service desks at the following libraries: City, Footscray Nicholson, Footscray Park and St Albans Libraries.

You will need your student ID (digital or card) in order to borrow a laptop via the automated laptop self-service locker system or service desk. The laptop will appear on your library record.

Return the laptop to where you borrowed it – either the automated laptop self-service locker, or to the Library service desk during opening hours, by the due date and time. Failure to return the laptop on time will incur a replacement fee and sanction on your library and student records.

To renew a laptop loan, or to report a laptop lost or damaged, contact Library staff . For other laptop support issues, contact VU IT support.

Lapsafe lockers: returning laptop

Charges may apply if laptop is overdue. Ensure that laptop does not remain ‘in loan’:

  1. Plug in the laptop properly and close the locker door securely.
  2. Check that the locker light is red.
  3. If the locker light is not red, the laptop will remain ‘in loan’ – ensure that the laptop is plugged in properly and that the locker door is closed.
  4. After the locker light has turned red, return to the touch screen.
  5. Select ‘print return receipt’, scan your student ID to print the return receipt.
  6. Keep the receipt as proof that laptop has been returned.

Book a PC with specialist software

At the City Library, you can book a PC with specialist software (EIKON, Datastream) using MyPC for up to 5 hours and up to 7 days in advance.

Library staff reserve the right to cancel or re-allocate a booking, or ask someone to leave if the:

  • student who booked the PC does not turn up within 15 minutes of the booking
  • behaviour of users is inappropriate.
